Tamshell’s Series 300 Rotary Lip Seals are designed to bridge the gap between conventional elastomer lip seals and mechanical face seals.
Unlike most elastomer lip seals, Tamshell’s Rotary Lip Seal does not utilize an extension spring on the tip of the sealing element. When the plastic lip is stretched into the shaft position, memory is created. The lip naturally wants to contract to its original geometry. The Rotary Lip Seal element provides a wide contact area and the load is distributed over this area. The highest load is at the tip of the element, then the load decreases toward the heel. The distribution of load provides longer life and enhanced sealing characteristics.
Rotary Lip Seals generally are chosen for high speed, low pressure rotary applications. Tamshell offers several variations of the Rotary Lip Seal design. Refer to the following illustration for details.
Rotary Lip Seal Styles-Style |
300 Series |
Application Details |
| 10 | This is a standard duty single lip design that can handle pressures from 30 to 50 psi. and shaft speeds up to 4,000 rpm. | |
| 20 | Is similar to the style 10 but incorporates high tip loading for higher pressure capability (up to 75 psi). | |
| 30 | This is a light duty single lip design intended to provide light frictional load. | |
| 40 | ![]() |
This a dual lip design for higher pressure applications (up to 200 psi.). |
Special configurations-In addition to the styles listed, all rotary lip seals can be designed using an integral metal support ring for larger diameter stability and for preventing low temperature seal contraction. Style 40 seals can be designed with opposite formed lips for bi directional sealing, can be designed with multiple lips for higher pressure applications and can be designed to include a flush-port between the seal lips.
O-ring Materials: O-rings are designed into the Rotary Lip Seals to facilitate mounting, provide outside diameter sealing and help prevent seal rotation. A variety of o-ring material options are available such as Buna N, Viton®, Silicone, EPR and FEP coated, to provide optimum chemical or temperature resistance.
Hostile environment applications such as those with extreme temperatures, aggressive media, high surface speeds, high pressures and lack of lubrication often force the specification of expensive and complicated mechanical face seals. Rotary Lip Seals offer a significant improvement in performance over elastomer lip seals, at a much lower cost than the mechanical face seal.
